The Challenge: Managing Prototype Production Across Multiple Departments
AGCO Corporation faced a challenge common in manufacturing: engineers needed to create work orders for prototype parts and assemblies but lacked visibility into existing inventory and real-time tracking through the shop floor. The challenge was building a system that could manage the entire prototype lifecycle, from work order creation through field testing, while coordinating data between engineering teams, manufacturing, and field personnel located hundreds of miles apart.
Spectrumware developed a Shop Order program that allows engineers to create and submit work orders for parts and assemblies. Once approved, orders are automatically routed to the prototype shop for scheduling and tracking through each work center.
The system managed part inventory in real time, identifying whether existing components could be reused or if new parts needed to be purchased or fabricated. This visibility helped the shop prioritize resources and eliminate unnecessary rework or delays.
Field Test Tracking for Reliability Data
AGCO also needed to evaluate prototype tractor performance across multiple test sites. Spectrumware built a Field Test application that allowed technicians to document failures, attach photos, and categorize issues by severity during operation, maintenance, and repair.
The system synchronized data between field personnel and engineering teams, ensuring everyone had current information on each prototype condition. Engineers used this shared data to calculate Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) to determine production readiness. Summary and trend reports gave management a clear view of testing progress and overall product reliability.
The Results: A Long-Term Partnership Across Multiple Departments
“We have partnered with Spectrum since early 2000 on custom software development projects. We have used them across various departments including Engineering, Manufacturing, and Purchasing. We have been pleased with their services and support, and we would recommend that other companies consider Spectrum when looking for custom software development.”
